I originally wrote this post after testing Pam’s five designs in 2023. I’m updating it now because these squares and my pictures continue to be discovered on Pinterest.
Back in 2023, I had the opportunity to test five granny square designs by Pam Knighton-Haener from A Yarn of Serendipity. The designs were created for the book 60 Quick Granny Squares which was published in 2024.
In this post, I would like to introduce you to these five squares through my test versions and show you the three versions I later made with a different yarn and different colours.
60 Quick Granny Squares – The Book

60 Quick Granny Squares features 60 six-inch granny square designs by different designers. All designs use Cascade 220 Superwash, a DK (#3) 100% wool yarn.
The patterns include both written instructions and charts. Some designs are more beginner-friendly, while others are a little more challenging. The book also includes useful information about different techniques, such as starting a square, changing colours and joining squares. At the end, there are several projects showing how the squares can be used.
There is quite a variety of designs in the book – and I really like the fact that all 60 squares are shown at the beginning, so you can see the whole collection at a glance. It’s definitely worth a look!
Pam’s designs and my test versions
Pam designed five squares for the book:
Running Routes, Sunflower Sizzle, Wriggle, Sol and Shift.
I had the opportunity to test all five designs back in 2023.

For my test versions, I used two different cotton yarns instead of the DK wool used for the book: Drops Safran and Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4. Both are sport weight (#2), 100% cotton yarns with a yardage of 160 m / 50 g.
Unfortunately, I didn’t make a note of the hook size I used. I believe it was a 2.75 mm hook, but I’m not completely sure.
Because I used a thinner yarn, my squares turned out at about 4.5 inches / 11.5 cm.
For all five designs, I used the same three colours: Dark Taupe and Orange from Drops Safran, and Apricot from Hobbii Rainbow Cotton.
A little bit 70s style – but I still like them!

My new versions of Running Routes, Wriggle and Shift
In 2025, I reworked three of the squares using a different yarn. I wanted to see how the designs would look at their intended size of 6 inches / 15 cm – and, to be honest, I also wanted to try a new colour combination.
This time I used Stylecraft Special DK with a 3.75 mm hook. The squares turned out almost exactly 6 inches / 15 cm.
The colours are completely different, though: instead of brown and orange shades, I went for a combination of soft pink, violet and grey tones.
My new colour combination is:
Hint of Silver · Pale Rose · Parma Violet · Powder Pink
Lovely, aren’t they? I especially love the combination of Pale Rose and Parma Violet.
You can find my versions on Ravelry as well, where I’ve added them to my projects. The book 60 Quick Granny Squares is also listed there, and some of the designers have added their individual designs.
One thing I particularly like about Pam’s designs is that these six-inch squares work beautifully with her twelve-inch squares, too. That opens up quite a few possibilities for combining them in a larger project. I’ve had an idea for that for a while – I just haven’t found the time to make it yet! Maybe one day I’ll finally get around to it!

Wow, such a great review! Personally, I really love your original colors. ♥️
awww, thank you so much ♥️
