About Me

Hi, I am ELeni and I am happy that you found me!

ELeni is just a short form – or combination – of my first name Edith and my middle name Helene.

I am from Germany and together with my husband I live in a small town about 40 km away from Frankfurt/Main.

I love

  • Our little house that we are still renovating
  • the tiny garden with the flowers, birds and bees
  • the Northern Sea and the Black Forest (but also a lot of other places in the world)
  • the smell of damp soil after a summer rain just like the smell of Vanilla, Cinnamon, Basil and Rosemary
  • and I love CROCHET, but that was not always so …

Like most grandmothers of my time my grandma taught me to crochet when I was little. But as a child I was not really interested in handicrafts. And although being a teenager during the 70s (yes, I’m that old) I always thought in particular crochet was a bit old-fashioned. Therefore I never got beyond the basic stitches. So I have spent a whole time of my life without a lot of needlecraft. Besides school and studies there was so much more that I didn‘t miss anything…

It was during my thirties that I was looking for a balance to a stressful job. So I started knitting socks and doilies, did a bit embroidery in cross stitch, tried some patchwork and sewed teddy bears.

I think it was in 2013 when I picked up crocheting again. Back then I spotted the beautiful work of international designers and discovered what you can do with crochet stitches. That’s when I started working with English patterns and learned all about clusters, puffs, popcorns, back- and front post stitches. And not to forget “frogging” of course.

In 2019 I started testing crochet patterns and since then hardly a day has passed without some yarn and my crochet hook.
During this last years I met a lot of nice, kind and talented people from all over the world. That’s why I decided to write this site in English.

I started this blog back in February 2021,  under the name This and That made by Eleni on Goggle Blogger. It was a great platform to get started but for various reasons I decided after a few months to switch to WordPress. In this context I have also decided to change the name of my blog.
I wanted to create a connection between my native language and my crochet language. Sometimes I get tangled up in both languages and blithely mix English and German when writing.
This is how Hooked on Häkelmaschen was created.

The word Häkelmaschen may seem strange to you. In German it is written with ä, an umlaut, which doesn‘t exist in the english alphabet.

Therefore I wanted to keep it simple and replaced the ä with an a in my web address (usually the ä is replaced with ae).

If you like to get in touch with me, feel free to comment on my posts or just drop me a mail.

You also find me on Instagram, Ravelry and Pinterest.
My Facebook page is unfortunately not as up to date as it should be, I lack the time. Sorry!

I hope you enjoy being here and find some inspiration 💕
