Hi, I am ELeni and I am happy that you found me!
ELeni is simply a shortened version of my first name, Edith, and my middle name, Helene.
I am from Germany and I live with my husband in a small town around 40 km from Frankfurt/Main.
I love
- Our little house that we are still renovating
- the tiny garden with the flowers, birds and bees
- the Northern Sea and the Black Forest (but also a lot of other places in the world)
- the smell of damp soil after a summer rain just like the smell of Vanilla, Cinnamon, Basil and Rosemary
- and I love CROCHETING, but that hasn’t always been the case.…
Like most grandmothers of her generation my grandma taught me to crochet when I was young. However, I wasn’t really interested in handicrafts as a child. And, being a teenager in the ’70s (yes, I’m that old), I always thought crochet in particular was a bit old-fashioned. Consequently, I never progressed beyond the basic stitches. I spent a long time of my life without doing much needlework. Besides school and university, there was so much more to do that I didn’t miss it…
During my thirties, I was looking for a way to balance out my stressful job. So I started knitting socks and doilies, doing some cross-stitch embroidery, trying my hand at patchwork and sewing teddy bears.
I think it was in 2013 that I took up crocheting again. At the time, I came across the beautiful work of international designers and realised the potential of crochet stitches. That’s when I started working with English patterns and learnt about clusters, puffs, popcorns and back- and front-post stitches. Not to mention ‘frogging’, of course!
I started testing crochet patterns in 2019, and since then, hardly a day has passed without me picking up my crochet hook and some yarn.
Over the past few years, I have met many nice, kind and talented people from all over the world. That’s why I decided to create this website in English.
I started this blog back in February 2021, under the name This and That made by Eleni on Goggle Blogger. It was a great platform to get started but for various reasons I decided after a few months to switch to WordPress. In this context I have also decided to change the name of my blog.
I wanted to create a connection between my native language and my crochet language. Sometimes I get tangled up in both languages and blithely mix English and German when writing.
This is how Hooked on Häkelmaschen was created.

The word Häkelmaschen may seem strange to you. In German it is written with ä, an umlaut, which doesn‘t exist in the english alphabet.

Therefore I wanted to keep it simple and replaced the ä with an a in my web address (usually the ä is replaced with ae).
If you like to get in touch with me, feel free to comment on my posts or just drop me a mail.
You also find me on Instagram, Ravelry and Pinterest.
My Facebook page is unfortunately not as up to date as it should be, I lack the time. Sorry!
I hope you enjoy being here and find some inspiration 💕
